Our Story

Roof Surveyor London was born out of frustration. Our founder, James Hartley, spent years working for large surveying firms and saw first-hand how clients were often given rushed, vague reports that left them none the wiser about the state of the roof over their heads.

"I saw so many people buy properties with serious roof defects that nobody had bothered to flag," James tells us. "One family moved into a house and within six months the ceiling in their spare bedroom collapsed. The roof had been failing for years. A proper independent survey would have changed everything."

So in 2010, James set up Roof Surveyor London with a simple mission: deliver truly independent, impartial and honest roof surveys that give clients the information they actually need — not just a box-ticking exercise. Today, we operate across the whole of the UK, with a team of accredited specialists who share that same commitment to transparency and quality.

With over 20 years of hands-on experience assessing roofs across the UK, James brings unparalleled expertise and a relentless commitment to honest, transparent reporting. When he's not on a rooftop, he's an avid cyclist and weekend fell-walker.

Sarah Bennett

Senior Surveyor – South & Midlands

Sarah joined the team in 2016 after five years with a London-based building consultancy. She specialises in flat roofs and commercial properties, and has a particular talent for translating complex technical findings into clear, actionable client reports. Outside work, Sarah is passionate about heritage buildings and period property renovation.

Marcus Webb

Survey Operations Manager

Marcus manages survey scheduling, client communications and quality assurance across the whole UK operation. With a background in construction project management and over a decade in the surveying sector, Marcus ensures every survey runs smoothly from booking to final report delivery.
